Speedway Children's Charities Honored at Philanthropic Luncheon
Assistance League of Charlotte hosted a Philanthropy Luncheon on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at the Covenant Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. The luncheon was an opportunity to introduce the community to Assistance League and the philanthropic programs member volunteers implement and fund. Those programs include Operation School Bell, Operation Check Hunger, Mecklenburg County Teen Court, Assistance League Scholarship Fund, and Assistance League Outreach.
Honorary Chair for this event was Former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory. Others speaking at this event were Advisory Board Chairman Ben Lincoln, Jacqualine Newkirk, a family member of a child who has benefited from the Operation School Bell program, Teen Court Judge and mentor Brian Cromwell and Teen Court member Lili Driggs from the Mecklenburg County Teen Court philanthropic program, and Advisory Board Member Joe Machicote. Joe represented Lance, Inc., the Principal Sponsor of the event.
The Operation School Bell National Award was presented to Speedway Children's Charities. Speedway Children's Charities has been a long time supporter of the Operation School Bell program. Since 1994, it has donated almost $80,000 to purchase new jackets, uniforms and shoes for students in the Charlotte Mecklenburg school system. These grants have enabled the Charlotte chapter to steadily increase the number of children served by Operation School Bell. Accepting the award was Amanda Hollingsworth, Director of Speedway Children's Charities and Megan Compton, Speedway intern.
