Speedway Children's Charities to Host Events During Inaugural NHRA Nationals
Speedway Children's Charities will host a charity golf tournament and dinner the week of the NHRA Nationals at zMAX Dragway with proceeds benefiting BRAKES, a non-profit organization founded by NHRA Top Fuel drag racer Doug Herbert in memory of his two sons who were killed in a car accident earlier this year.
The Speedway Children's Charities Golf Classic and the Doug Herbert & Friends Charity Dinner will be held on Thursday, Sept. 11, in conjunction with the grand opening of zMAX Dragway in Concord, N.C.
"I'm really glad that we're able to do something for BRAKES during the week of the drag race here in Charlotte," said Herbert, driver of the SnaponFranchise.com Top Fuel dragster. "I've lived in this area and had my race shop in nearby Lincolnton, N.C., for years now. This is where my boys grew up and went to school and this is where their friends are, so I know it's going to be an important and emotional week for me."
The Speedway Children's Charities Golf Classic will be held at Rocky River Golf Club, located less than a mile from zMAX Dragway. The 32-team tournament begins at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start and gives fans the opportunity to play golf alongside NHRA drivers and personalities. Mike Rucker, from the Carolina Panthers, and Aerosmith band member Brad Whitford will also be playing.
"With motor vehicle crashes being the leading cause of death among American teenagers, BRAKES plays an important role in training and educating families about safe driving everywhere," said Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Lowe's Motor Speedway. "The Speedway Children's Charities Golf Classic and the Doug Herbert & Friends Charity Dinner will generate awareness and raise funds to support the organization as it works to save the lives of teenage drivers."
The Doug Herbert & Friends Charity Dinner will include live and silent auctions. Auction items range from autographed memorabilia and one-of-a-kind race weekend experiences to vacations and condo rentals. The dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. and is being held at The Speedway Club, located in Lowe's Motor Speedway's Smith Tower.
Tickets for the Doug Herbert & Friends Charity Dinner and player packages for the SCC Golf Classic are still available. To register or obtain further information, please contact Amanda Hollingsworth at (704) 532-3318 or firstname.lastname@example.org or click here for invite.
About Speedway Children's Charities
Making a difference in a child's life is the focus of Speedway Children's Charities and we strive to do this in collaboration with the non-profit organizations we support nationwide. Individually, SCC's local chapters identify the needs of children in their communities and award grants to organizations that address them. Together in 2007, we awarded more than $3.3 million to over 510 organizations.
BRAKES, which stands for Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe, is a non-profit organization founded by NHRA Top Fuel drag racer Doug Herbert in memory of his two sons who were killed in a car accident.
